Building Careers and Community

Currently the COO of the Colorado Technology Association, Monica Coughlin has worn many hats over the last two decades, but one thing that’s constant is her commitment to the technology community in Colorado. Since graduating from Regis University in 1998 with degrees in computer science and business administration, she has worked in tech throughout her career. Above all, she’s a people person, and she credits her Jesuit Catholic education with instilling the value of giving back.

What It Means to Be a "Convener"

"I've been in the technology industry my whole career: private sector, public sector and now a nonprofit organization. I worked for the State of Colorado pulling people together to help with the state's broadband challenges. And in this role, I'm a convener pulling people from all different roles and industries together around the theme of technology — either their job is tech, or they work in a tech business."

Service as a Lifelong Habit

Community service is key to being a Regis student and it typically has a lifelong impact. Another commonly shared quality among Regis alumni is their dedication to giving back to the university. Along with maintaining a career, Monica also works on the Regis advisory board for the Anderson College of Business and Computing, which has been a truly special experience.

"I remember doing projects at Regis, like working at a physical rehabilitation center that was helping people who had suffered terrible injuries recover. Each year there was some type of service project that I was part of, and it feels good to be able to help others. Since graduating, I've volunteered with Big Brothers, Big Sisters as a sports buddy mentor. That was really an important part of my life, helping children build confidence and be part of a group and connected to people who care. They do so many wonderful things for the community that I didn't even realize."

Loving the Mile-High City

Choosing to attend Regis was the start of Monica’s life in Colorado. She loved it so much that she ended up staying and planting permanent roots.

"I’m originally from Dallas. I came out to Denver to go to college, and I fell in love with the city. I've been here since I graduated and I don't see myself leaving anytime soon. I love the beauty of Colorado and this really special community, the spirit of collaboration here in Denver. People want to support and help each other, in part because there's so many people who have moved out here from other cities and states. So, they're wanting to meet and connect with people they don't know." ---
